George, it depends on the film – but many people get bridge loans from banks or private equity for finishing funds. Totally depends on many variables. I went into this in more detail in my latest Virtual Seminar “5 Ways To Finance Your Film in 2010″:

What’s the best way to obtain Finishing Funds and P&A money in today’s market? Private equity, bank loans (against Letters of Intent), film funds, etc. Targeting an initial 200-300 screen release, then rolling revenues to expand to larger release if warranted.

Hey Stacey, Considering a co-pro deal with Nat Geo on a true story that I discovered in the Southwest. I’m worried that they will take control of the rights to the story. Should I package it as an Independent film instead? (it’s a Native American hero we discovered out here)

We have a Christian film in post-production, about father-son relationships. (http://www.onegoodmanthemovieblog.com) The rough cut is complete. A private trailer is available (which Corkey loves). A major distributor has made an offer, and we are scheduling to meet with more mini-majors and specialty divisions (Lionsgate, Vivendi, Samuel Goldwyn, Warner Premiere, etc.) Question: What’s the best way to obtain Finishing Funds and P&A money in today’s market? Private equity, bank loans (against Letters of Intent), film funds, etc. We obviously want to retain more control over the release and get better ROI. Thank You!

(FYI – We’ve been following your advice over the last two years, Stacey. Incorporating your wisdom on our first film, COME WHAT MAY, and now on your second film. Your advice has always worked in our dealings with investors and distributors!)

Do you think the latest edition of the Ulmer Scale is an accurate appraisal of actor bankability in foreign territories? What kind of number should a lead actor and lead actress have in a $4-$6 million film to be considered bankable.
