DIY Film Market Case Study

DIY Film Market Case Study

I plucked this one from the Film Specific archives – one of our most popular Case Studies…..

After several years of attending film markets and studying the dynamics, learning the “business” of filmmaking and distribution, and meeting the buyers face-to-face, filmmaker Christian Viel started selling his films (and those from other filmmakers) at international film markets.

After a couple years learning ropes and establishing relationships, Christian began making deals directly with buyers from around the world, and even securing pre-sales on his own.

Take a listen and see if you aren’t inspired to tackle the next major Film Market (AFM) on your own. Or would you rather spend your energies elsewhere and stick with a sales agent (at least at first)? This Case Study will help you decide…. Enjoy!

Hi Stacey,

The film we’re working on is budgeted at 6.4 million. Have an offer for funding from a bank & want to pick your brain on factors we should be considering. Besides general terms (loan length, interest etc.) what should we be considering when negotiating terms for this type of funding?
My main concern is payback terms but what is typical & what will get us in a bind?
We appreciate any nuggets of information you can provide.

Thank You!

At about 30 minutes in, Christian Viel mentions a book that sounds like “The Curious Film-maker’s Guide” but I cannot find a book under this name on Amazon. What is he talking about, Stacey?

@ Lisa — you found a bank to lend you the entire amount without any other funding in place? My concern then would be what are they using as collateral and how/when are you on the hook for payments back to them? How do you plan to recoup 6.4 million to pay them back? No one is paying those prices these days.

@ Mark — not sure either what he said! Sorry about that. I will try and listen again and see….

Stacey
